Chapter 16

Gloriana

“You’re just in time,” Erynn said as we all ducked out of my tent. “Dinner is ready.”

My eyes scanned the camp for Fen, but I didn’t know what she might look like other than her hair. Lyall hadn’t taken the time to introduce me to everyone in the Guard.

The early fall weather this morning was cool but not cold enough to make me feel like I needed a jacket. The strange fabric draped over my arms in a manner that was more distracting than sleeves. This was going to take some getting used to.

“I’ll find Fen,” Kenji said. “You guys go ahead and get some grub.”

I wanted to go with him, not give him a moment alone with this Fen, but my stomach chose that moment to rumble, and Merc pulled me toward the fire. Boulders were strewn everywhere and I watched my step.

The fire crackled at the center of camp, and bowls of food passed from hand to hand as the Guard loaded them down. To my surprise, the food turned out to be typical fare: potatoes and carrots, roasted chicken, and the most delicious honeyed bread I’d ever tasted. Not exactly what I’d normally have for breakfast, but then again, I’d skipped dinner entirely. We were supposed to eat before having cake at my birthday party, but of course that plan, like many others, hadn’t survived my entire life collapsing into chaos.

The fire warmed me as I devoured the meal in a matter of minutes before becoming self-conscious. What would they think of their long-lost queen inhaling her food? The rest of the Guard sat around the fire, though they were strangely quiet. Maybe everyone was as engrossed by their meal as I was.

Nolan wandered over and began collecting bowls from those nearest to me.

“Is the lady finished?” Nolan asked, gesturing to my bowl. I nodded, and he took it from my hands without another word.

From my perch sitting on a shin-high rock, he was only slightly taller than me. For the first time, I looked upward into his fiery orange eyes. The color was certainly striking, burning with shrewd intelligence, taking in more than anyone suspected, hiding a passion long buried. A spark of something like defiance lit his gaze, but it was gone when he blinked, leaving me to wonder if I’d imagined it all. I studied him as he walked away. Without the college student glamor, he was sturdier than before, though no taller. He seemed to disappear behind his unkempt beard, shielding his face from everyone else.

My ears perked up when I heard Kenji’s voice, and I looked around. He was talking to a beautiful woman on the other side of camp. She had gotten rid of the ponytail, so her hair hung free — just as long and straight as Kenji’s, but in a foxy red. She was a few inches shorter than his five-seven height, and they had the same narrow cast to their faces. They looked like they belonged together. Jealousy made me clench my jaw as I tried to avoid stomping over and declaring that he was mine.
